My name is Flying Laura., and I am the 2011 American Pole Fitness Champion. The name “ Flying Laura” was originally giving to me as a nickname for my fast, no handed aerial pole movement and has stuck with me since. I currently reside in Las Vegas, Nevada, where I teach the art of pole at Shine Alternative Fitness. For nearly 12 years I have enjoyed spinning, flipping and contorting on the vertical apparatus. I have competed, performed, and taught across the US, and beyond. Nearly all my life I have most enjoyed my physical play - time, which has led me to my passion of pole and performing. As a child I had minimal training in dance and tumbling training (about 2 years total), but took up competitive sprint racing from the age of 11 – 18, and then cheerleading at the age of 15 – 18. I began pole at the age of 21 in the nightclubs of Kansas City, Mo, but it would not be several years before I fully submerged myself in it. Consuming my early 20’s was being a dedicated martial artist, which was my main discipline for several years. I would train anywhere from 3-6 hours daily for several years. Often times cross training in cardio, strength, and flexibility in addition to the marital skill sets. In more recent years, pole has become my main focus and passion, and ART. I moved to San Diego, Ca in 2006, where I continued my dance and athletic carrier as a boxing and group fitness instructor. Soon pole started becoming known, and my love for it never left. So I began to teach pole, competing, and performing in the main stream. Along the way meeting some amazing artists, acrobats, dancers and industry people. I believe in pole dance, but this journey is not just about the pole. I have discovered so much more. A love for health in mind, body, and spirit. Strength, perseverance, nutrition, self acceptance, and how to follow a dream. I believe passion is to be shared and I do so through performance, as well as teaching fitness and dance.
